Did you miss me I missed you all. I had some health issues slowly getting back into things I have a finished project to show you. My CDA group has been having some challenges for "steampunk" dolls (or birds) and this is my little project done from a fabulous frowning francis (don't you love the name) pattern. I'm looking forward to the Christmas break this year I'm working through and taking a break in January. Yeah more time to craft hooray working on a new bear pattern and a new doll and a quilt. I hope you all have a lovely Christmas with family and friends and 2012 is everything you hope for.

These are the two dolls finished from the online class I just did with Anita and Brianne called "Things with Wings" on Willowing a series of three dolls including the Bee doll in an earlier post. What I loved about this class was the freedom to use anything you liked in the dolls from the hand painted fabric on the butterfly which was fabulous to make to the hand dyed fabric of the Dragon Fly. Encouragement to be creative and think outside the square with colours and fabrics I can't wait for the next class to begin I'll be sure and post details when they are released sometime around October /November in the mean time I'm doing an art journal course with Anita on her Just be Yourself website we've just finished week one of five and I'm loving it.

I found these photos today when I was trying to organise my photo gallery they where taken at the Sydney Royal Easter Show (long story) a-n-y-w-a-y these where the winning cloth dolls this year. The big fairy doll is by Marilyn Halcomb a marvellous doll maker with the most incredible sculpted dolls. Marilyn is a very sharing person and I have had the pleasure of meeting her several times at shows and workshops not sure who made the Jester but aren't they awesome.

Picasso or Van Gogh

These are my hand drawn ATC's of famous paintings for my latest swap. Picasso's Head of a Woman and Van Goghs Sunflowers. Sunflowers I used water colour pencils and Head of a Woman I used prima pencils. I love both artists works very different but also very inspiring. I love both styles and often try to image what kind of men they were passionate creative obessive certainly not ordinary.

330 Butterflies

Sometime ago Trudi from Two Dresses Studio sent out a call for artists of all shapes and sizes to participate in a project called the Butterfly Effect. The two butterflies above are mine, the orange and blue one made from handmade paper and Sams hand painted purple & green (her favourite colours) contributions which will eventually be displayed in the Houston Holocaust Museum in the USA. I found this a very moving experience and am proud to be a part of it. the museum hopes to have over 1 million butterflies on display when the exhibit opens next year. There is still plenty of time to join in if that is what you would like visit Trudi's blog for details or the Museum itself.

My latest art doll she is a very different kind of bee she is hand painted with acrylics and her face is done in watercolour pencils. Her wings are fabric paper stamped inked and stitched. My first try with the mixed media thing and I loved it. She is a present for a very special woman in my life one who has helped me be the person I am. My MUM.

Her sisters the butterfly and the dragon fly are almost done I'm working on their wings.

This months challenge was Owls I really liked painting the eyes my favorite part of painting a dolls face. I use acrylics to paint these ATC's but I have recently started a water colour class at community college one night a week and I'm really enjoying it. Still life mainly it's surprising how much to be seen in an empty wine bottle or a piece of fruit. I was brave and showed these cards to the artist teacher and now Rose has challenged me to do a water colour ATC (what was I thinking). I hope to show you one of my water colours one day at the moment I have a long way to go.

The last few weeks have left me standing in their wake just when I thought I was getting everything under control wham! It's only two weeks until christmas I can't believe it. I was hoping to get these girls done before chrissie but it looks like it'll be after now thats OK their new mum doesn't need them until middle of January for birthday presents. The hair and dresses are open and the footwear so I get a free reign over them. Their faces are free hand I don't use any templates I think it gives them more character.

Have you wondered what I've been up to? The blog has been a little quiet. Well I have been madly sewing away for bear shows for the last month travelled interstate to attend them and this weekend is my last one for the year but .... I couldn't not be making something in between and here is what I have come up with. Chrissie ornies for swaps and shows so much fun making them. I love painting them and primming them up to look old. I'm working on a Christmas tree right now and then gingerbread boy & girl and a crow (wearing a xmas hat of course). These have been sent off to a swap for one of my prim groups and I sure hope Val likes them.

Just wanted to share my finds at the markets today. I was so excited when I saw the Guord because I have seen some fab dolls made from them and would love to have a go. I'll try anything once lol. I loved the tea pot and baby quilt with the teddies on too. I was amazed to find a wooden flower press I haven't seen one of these for many years I have a spot picked out for the wooden heart shelf that I will prim over first and the decoupage tray with the vintage ladies so thats all my summer projects now to find the time I have a few bear shows between now and then to finish but I'll get there.

Congratulations Nanny & Pop (Neil & Marie) today the 13th October my Mum & Dad celebrate 54 years of marriage isn't that fantastic!! They have 5 kids 9 grandchildren ranging from 14 to 30 years old and 3 great grandchildren ranging from 3 to 10. They have been through tough times and goodtimes and they are as sold as a rock. My youngest sister has been married for 26 years and I have been married for 21 years maybe we have some of that rubbing off on us. We can hope. Love you Mum love you Dad.

I love these hearts that the postman bought me this week all the way from my friend Heather in England in my last post I showed the heart I sent to Heather. Secret Swap

I love to do swaps this is my latest one a secret heart swap I made this heart for a Yahoo Group Swap on All Things Primitive it is made from vintage chenelle (I remember having a bedspread as a little kid made of it) I bought this fabric at the Sydney Craft & Quilt Fair at Rosehill Gardens 2 or 3 years ago now and it's been in my stash ever since so I used it and matched it with a vintage brooch and pearl earing I had in my collection I use to accessorise my dolls and bears. I was very happy with it and Heather my swap partner is too so I'm pleased about that I always have a bit of an anxious moment when I'm waiting to see if my things are OK. I wanted it to look vintage / prim / pretty maybe bordering on shabby chic and it is now with Heather in England.

Charity Shop Find

Last weekend Sam and I went down to the local thrift shop for a look around and much to my delight I found this table. I had been trying to come up with something to store my ever increasing fabric stash on/in and thought this was perfect. So I bought it home in the back of the car thank goodness for Holden Captiva's that all the seats fold down in. I sanded it back this morning and shot down to the local Bunnings store and picked this cool shade of Green to paint it. This is the first coat done and when it is finished and I have arranged my fabrics I will show another picture.

A whole lot of fun

I joined a swap on CDA recently to create an ATC to swap with a partner. I had been wanting to do one of these for ages and this was the push I needed to sit down and do one. Sam joined me and we have had the best time making our little creations today. I have used different techniques and all the backgrounds are painted and then overstamped and then embellished with buttons ribbons etc. I haven't had this much fun in ages.

hours this afternonn by sewing these patchwork squares together. They are part of a kit I bought back awhile I don't know how to fully make a quilt and this is where I have come to a stop....what's next? Some of my blogging and group friends make beautiful quilts and they have inspired me to have a go. I'll have to surf the net for instructions and read up. I've been busy making more doll bodies and heads for some cloth & clay dolls I want to do and currently I have 5 gesso'd and ready for their first lot of clay. They'll be an on going project over the next few months. I'm trying different techniques I even used a different gesso on one this time it's black not white they will all be paper clay though and I'll try for different looks skin tones etc should be fun and all but one are the same size as my Ivy Jane.

I will admit I know next to nothing on porcelain dolls. They are lovely and I have a few in my collection that I have shown in earlier posts. My great love are cloth dolls especially prim dolls BUT when I saw this doll at a the same show as my last post I bought her because I think she is so different. She has three faces! I don't know what kind you would call her (note to self I should google that) Happy Sad and Sleepy and her head turns on her body. I was fascinated. I will have a good think about how to dress her especially the head ware :)

Last weekend while I was attending a local doll bear and crafty show with my bears I was lucky enough to be placed next to an elderly couple who were selling off their huge and diverse collection of dolls. There was a huge collection of all sorts and sizes mostly Australian early dolls which flew off their table. What caught my eye was the basket on the floor next to their table that held a collection of gollies and folk art dolls that were on sale ranging for $5 to $10 dollars. I love a bargain :) Something in the basket was calling me I got down low and had a close look at the contents and to my hearts delight I found these three dolls. I was ecstatic they touched me on many levels 'prim black old folky'sooo for the princely sum of $15 I bought them all. I love the faceless girl and on seeing them all together couldn't split them up.

My Sewing Machines

After my sewing machine needed some repairs and I went through withdrawal for 3 weeks and decided to buy myself a backup machine I could kill two birds with one stone because Sam wants to learn to sew and I don't want her using my machine (thats how it needed repairs in the first place)As luck would have it Janome has a sale on and I got this new JR1012 model for $199 with 12 month warranty. It has 4 step button holes and lots of stitches so I think I got a real bargain. My big machine is a Janome Decor Excel and I love it. It has more stitches and auto buttons holes and I have had it for around 5 years. While we were there picking up the JR1012 today I saw a starter embroidery machine for $799 and Gordon has said we can layby it and that will be my early birthday present. Hooray Hooray Hooray. My head is spinning thinking of all the things I can do with it for my dolls and bears.

Ivy Jane

This is Ivy Jane (after my grandmother) my second paperclay doll from a workshop based on the Izannah Walker Dolls from the 1800's. I can recommend the Izannah Walker Workshop run by Dixie Redmond because for a complete novice like me it was easy to understand and there are heaps of pictures to follow (Visual learner here). I am very happy with Ivy Jane I managed to finish her painting yesterday. I used acrylics to paint her and artist oil's for the ageing. I just love the sculpting part the paperclay is so easy to use and sets rock hard. I wanted to share because my sewing machine won't come home for two more weeks from the repair shop so I can't make her clothes yet. I did find some pretty vintage fabric at my favourite antiques centre on Saturday for her dress and am looking for just the right under garment fabric to use. I also found some lovely vintage lace I might add to her dress? Stand by for her final photo shoot.

Adding to my new doll collection. These sweeties are from Black Crow Primitives the wonderfully talented Lori Kai in Hawaii. I love their beautiful faces and their costumes are lovely. I'm still working on my doll nearly happy with the sculpt and waiting on some supplies to finish her body with then I'll start the painting (my favourite part). My sewing machine is having a bit of a hissy fit at the moment (glad I don't machine sew my bears) and I'm trying to find someone local to fix it I'll be lost with out it. I was in bunnings yesterday with DH and picked up some bedlegs that appealed to me for art dolls (don't know when I'll get to them) I'll be sure to let you know though :)

This is my latest doll project I am making an Izannah Walker Doll in a workshop with Dixie Redmond her body and head are done and I have done the gesso part. I am now doing the legs and then the arms with thumbs attached after the arms are finished. These dolls are just gorgeous to prim lovers like me and I hope I do her justice I have a long way to go but will show updates as I go. I thought you might like to see my doll collection I don't have a lot didn't really consider myself a doll person until the last few months when I discovered Cloth Doll Artistry and Cloth and Clay Doll groups. How wrong I was. I am delighted to show you and I'd point out the little one in the front with the blue dress and dark hair is my favourite they are mostly vinatge dolls from a collection that was split up a few years back (very sad) but joyful for me to have these babies with me. I just realised they don't have names well that won't do I'll have to ask for help here what do you think can you give me a name for them.

Here she is my very first cloth and clay doll I am really pleased with her I loved the ageing part and the painting part. I'm cooking the fabric for her dress right now but couldn't wait to show her to the world heaps of room for improvement and things I would do a little different next time but there will definitely be a next time.

I have had so much fun this weekend doing my first ever sculpt with paper clay what a great product it is so many possibilites. This is my doll all ready for painting now and dressing then I make the skirt I've run out of weekend so will have to wait until next week now. I'm making progress here are the latest photos taken after all the stuffing has been done and she has been Gesso'd from head to foot. The next step is to start the sculpting process this is going to be so much fun unfortunately I will have to wait until the weekend so I can get everything ready and set up as I'm back to work tomorrow after a summer holiday with my mum and dad coming to visit and spending every waking moment with them until they went home to New Zealand on Thursday morning I started missing them as soon as they were out of my sight and it's always embarrassing a middle aged woman crying walking through the airport but I do it everytime!

New Project

I am now moving on to my second project a cloth & clay online class over at Cloth & Clay Dolls. I managed to turn the arms and legs without putting a hole in them which I was pleased about I used the Itsy Bitsy Finger Turner set I bought sometime back and they were great. Next I watch the tutorial for stuffing 1. the arms and legs then 2. the body then onto fun parts. Watch this space.

This is Jo although I finished Flo completely first Jo was the first face done. I used artist pastels which I think has given her a whimiscal look to me a real prim annie look.

Hello and Happy New Year I hope 2010 is shaping up as a good one so far I know mine is and I just want to share something with you all technically it is not Doll related but I can qualify that by saying it is a Doll Magazine and the wonderful Michelle Munzone has a gorgeous pattern of Sabine as a project in it along side my first ever published project pattern of my bear Strawberry Delight. Hello it's Christmas Eve already someone tell me please where did that time go? It's been a little crazy around here over the last week or so but I can finally sit down every thing is ready for the big day tomorrow breakfast is organised traditional lunch around 2ish and dessert around 5 ish give or take an hour or so and then sit down in the evening to watch my favourite video It's a wonderful life. A name to a face

The girls have their faces on at last now they can see what all the excitement is about. They are all different and I have used different styles on each. The one on the right with the blue eyes is my favourite with such a whimsical expression and she was done with pastels (chalk) the green eyed one in the middle was done with pencils and was the first face done. The one on the left with the buttons eyes was a big mistake and so I have sown buttons on and I think she looks rather gothic which my daughter likes and wants me to finish for her so she has been saved from a trip to the bin (the doll not my daughter lol.)So now it is on to the hair which arrived this week in lovely colours and a trip to the art supply shop today bought home paints and brushes and sealers to keep going on legs. So stay tuned same doll time same doll channel.

A challenge I have entered on CDA is for a Xmas Ornament and a Gingerbread man and while I have been working on the Annies I put together my first prim ornament which was a hoot to make and my gingerbread man who is filled and now has to be decorated. It was so much fun to hand draw a pattern and make up somthing out of it.

Update on the Annies

So we are up to : 1, the annies are stuffed 2, I just have to attach arms and legs , before I do that I need to paint the legs in which ever pattern I choose , then do their little faces (the scary stuff) I'm practicing on paper at the moment until I'm happy with them and I have decided to 1, Paint 2, Chalk and 3, Pencils. I have ordered hair in three or four colours and it should arrive through the week can't wait.

What I have learnt so far is not to stuff to hard and not to over fill the arms and legs I couldn't get an arm through the dress sleeve so they have been put to one side until the girls are finished and checked for size. I think maybe I am a little hard with the stuffing I think that comes from my bears lol.

Making Progress

This is what I have been doing today (between running Sam to dress rehearsal by 9.30, having an emergency dash to the dance wear shop for new tights and collecting her at 5.00 and a trip to the post office to collect my new prim dolls from Miss Pootsie I'll save them for a later post ) . I am making three little prim raggies which I cut out, sewed and put in the prim soup mix of tea bags, ground cinnamon and a dash of vanilla, baked in the oven and now am getting ready to fill. I also while they were stewing and baking made the dresses, now just the bloomers to go (maybe tomorrow) they will need to be aged as well. All this is an online class at Cloth Doll Artistry were they are very patient with a newbie to dolls who asks questions and more questions and then more questions lol. Watch this space!

Although this is not a "doll" I thought I would post this picture to show my latest paper mache sculpt (it also has one of my bears sitting on his back) a nice messy time was had.

Sitting Lady

This is my Sitting Lady she is made from fabric that has been wrapped around a wire frame her head dress and shawl added after. I have used paverpol fabric hardener which sets rock hard is water and weather proof. The beauty of her is that when she gets dirty just hose her off, tired of the colour just paint her it is a brilliant way to use up those odd pieces of fabric. I had a lot of fun making her she is the second paverpol doll I have done the first one in a beautiful bottle green lives on my mum and dads veranda.

Yesterday I joined this fantastic cloth doll site. There is a wealth of knowledge there to draw from especially from established artists, teachers, tutorials and tips. Everything a girl like me could want. I'm so excited I'm nearly giddy...

Gnome Doll Number 2

This gnome doll was made from a pattern book by Bethan Short of Australia where there are mix and match patterns to choose from. I enjoyed making this one although my 13 year old picked the fabric combination. I like the drawing of the face on this one and was happy with the sculpting. Next......
